The Governor-General, Ms Quentin Bryce AC, CVO, announced the recipients of the Macular Degeneration Foundation Research Grants on World Sight Day, 13 October, 2011. Nearly three-quarters of a million dollars was awarded to pre-eminent world-leading researchers to find reasons and answers for Macular Degeneration.

First MD patients treated with embryonic stem cells – early results

Preliminary results in the first two humans treated with retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells derived from human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) have just been published in The Lancet. One patient, aged 51, has Stargardt’s disease (the most common form of Macular Degeneration in younger people) and the other, aged 78, has age-related MD.

Postcard funding campaign a success!

Thanks to the many active supporters of the Foundation, the federal government has heard and acknowledged the Foundation’s postcard campaign for increased funding. The Australian Government has responded that it ‘values the important work undertaken by the Macular Degeneration Foundation and the positive contribution it makes for the early detection and effective management of macular degeneration in the community.

National TV and Radio Campaign

The Macular Degeneration Foundation continues to lead the world in raising awareness of MD and yet another national TV & radio campaign will air from October to December. Thank you to Novartis who have been outstanding in their support of the MD Foundation and this campaign.

Aspirin and AMD

Some recent media reports discuss a new study which suggests a possible link between the risk of developing AMD and the use of aspirin. This is very preliminary research, and is in marked contrast to many other studies which have found no evidence of a link between the risk of AMD and the use of aspirin. As such, if you taking aspirin on the recommendation of your doctor, you should NOT stop taking it without first discussing this with your doctor.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment – The Foundation’s Position

A number of Australia’s peak medical and patient advocacy groups are advising patients to be careful of alternate treatments that are advertised in newspapers or on the internet claiming dramatic success in the treatment of MD.

Is anything more precious than our sight?

Macular Degeneration (MD) is the leading cause of blindness in Australia, affecting central vision. MD is primarily age related and most frequently affects people over the age of 50. One in seven people over the age of 50 are affected by the disease and the incidence increases with age. It is sometimes referred to as Age Related Macular Degeneration or 'AMD'.
